St. Andrews Lock and Dam
National Historic Site
The St. Andrews Locks and Dam, a historic engineering masterpiece spanning the Red River in Lockport. Completed in 1910, this 270-meter-long bridge-dam is the largest and only remaining “Caméré”-style dam in the world. Its innovative design features movable curtains that can be raised or lowered to regulate water flow.
H.E. Vautelet, the Canadian engineer responsible for its design, adapted the French dam to deal with the destructive and unpredictable floodwaters of the Red River.
Over a century later, the dam remains fully operational, playing a vital role in Winnipeg’s flood season. Take in the scenic beauty of the Red River and enjoy stunning views from Lockport Provincial Heritage Park—a perfect spot to appreciate this extraordinary piece of Canadian history.
