Courtyard Pottery

Hello, my name is Joan Greenlay, and I am the ceramic artist behind Courtyard Pottery. About eight years ago, I began my journey into ceramics by taking classes at the Winnipeg Art Gallery with my daughter and a friend. Trying this craft had been a lifelong goal, and I believe I’ll always be learning and evolving in my practice. Working with clay is a humbling experience—sometimes it brings disappointment, but more often it brings delight.

I am especially thrilled to participate in the Red River North Tourism Garden Art Tour, as it aligns perfectly with my passion for nature. Spending the day in a beautiful garden, surrounded by art and nature, is truly inspiring. A consistent theme runs through my work: I often use leaves and flowers to create impressions or form dishes, using plants like Hosta and Rhubarb. Additionally, I create animal-themed pieces, such as bird sculptures and polar bears, which have found homes across several provinces. Fish also serve as a significant inspiration for my sculptures, wall hangings, and wind chimes.

Most of my work consists of functional pieces, including bowls, plates, and platters, crafted in a range of colors and neutrals. Each piece is a reflection of my love for the natural world and my continuous exploration of this versatile medium
