Date: May 19, 2019
Time: 10:00 am  to  4:30 pm

Find out about the incredible biodiversity of wetlands!

Find out about the incredible biodiversity of wetlands by joining one of our animal surveys or joining us on a wetland hike.

Become a biologist for a day with these exciting activities:

  • Songbird banding – Participate in the real-life science data collection by observing the capture, data collection (including weight and wing length and body fat), banding and release of songbirds at Oak Hammock).
  • Water chemistry – In our laboratory, put on your lab coat and safety goggles while you test wetland sample water for components such as pH, CO2, nitrates, phosphates, and silica and learn the role wetlands play in water quality.
  • Invertebrate sampling – Using various sampling techniques, collect and identify invertebrates in the water. Learn how the presence of certain species is linked to the overall health of the water.
  • Biodiversity Walk – Using binoculars and field guides, observe and record wildlife species along your route. Learn about micro-climates and how they factor into animal behaviour.
  • Wildlife surveys – Collect scientific data by surveying animal groups (Frog survey: learn to identify species by sound and record climate data, Dragonfly and Butterfly surveys: collection and identification with a specialist).
  • Radio-telemetry – Learn to locate animals by using real transmitters and receivers.

For those wanting an extra challenge try wading through the wetland in chest wader ($3 for members and $6 for non-members).

Participate in a guided canoe adventure ($3 for members and $6 for non-members) or rent your own canoe ($15 for 45 minutes).
